Ski, Eat, Sleep, Repeat X 40 years

December 31, 1982, Wanda marries Gary.  1/1/1983 they honeymoon at Timberline Lodge.  1/2/2023 They celebrate 40 years of wedded bliss again at Timberline lodge.

Drove to Mt. Hood through Madras.  Roads were initially slippery with a heavy coating of ice.  The ice disappeared at Chemult and the drive was partly sunny and roads mostly clear the rest of the way.

Our destination was Timberline Lodge, a revisit of our honeymoon 40 years ago.
I won't go in to all of the groovy knowledge of this historic lodge.  Just to say, it was created in the 1930s by the WPA (Work Project of America) to put workers and craftsmen, engineers and dreamers together to build this beautiful place as a  means to work for pay when America was coming out of the depression.  Masonry, Iron Work, Weavers, Stitchers, Woodworkers put this place on the map.  There are guilds in Portland that still support the hand craftsmanship of Timberline lodge.  Timberline lodge dot com

Each time we turned a new corner a new piece of art appeared, a new hand-wrought pine cone or rams head.  Fantastic.  Timberline is open year around.  If you are a summer or winter person you should take it in.

The only bad thing was that the swimming pool and suffered a crack during an earthquake and it was no longer is use.  :(

Because we advised it was our 40th anniversary we got lots of treats.  We had cookies and wine delivered to our room (Timberline bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon).  Dessert in the Cascade dining room was on the house.  Stay 2 days, ski free.

About skiing, the first day was a full on snowstorm with powder snow.  The Kruzer run was over a mile long and very la-de-da.  So fun to ski and ski without stopping.  The second day was a little warmer and over cast.  The snow was a little more sticky but we stayed close to the Kruzer runs and skied for hours, or 4 hours if you wish.

My friends the Norrises are fabulous for taking food photos.  Me...not so much.  The food was wonderful, generous portions, beautifully served, delicious.  We breakfasted at the buffet (voted best buffet by Pacific Crest Trail Hikers our son Paul advises).  We had snacks and n/a drinks for lunch and dinner in the Cascade Restaurant for our anniversary.  Other meals were taken at the Ram's Head bar.

All of the staff were so friendly.  Some of the staff lived in apartments at Government Camp.  There was also housing for them at the lodge.

We had the 40th Anniversary Cribbage Tournament with our 40 year old Timberline Lodge cards and Mrs. Welbourn was the winner.

We visited often with a couple from the east coast.  We recommended Sun Valley Lodge to them for their future entertainment.

The man of wood advised that they burned at least a cord of wood a day with all of the lobby fireplaces and rooms that had fireplaces.  The split wood was 24 inches long.

It was sunny the day we arrived and I got a good photo of Mt. Hood from the road.  Then it socked in and snowed on us for that evening and the next two days.  Friday, as we prepared to depart, the clouds broke to a gorgeous sunrise and glorious mountain view.

Happy New Year!  Gary and Wanda

2023 Good For You And Me!!

January 2023.  We hope for a joyous and prosperous new year for You and Us!

We start out all in good health and that is good.

At some point in December 2022, I decided to finish and publish a short story I have been working on for years.  "Princesses In The North".  It is a story of a car trip to Idaho to elk hunting camp when we were children.  It is the 3rd in my book series "American Princess".

It will be available at Amazon.com under author W. A. Welbourn.  If you buy the book or Ebook please give me a review.

Fall Color - Man and Dog - October 2020

2020 has drawn on so long, with contentious politics, pandemic and lack of hugs.  However, Mom Nature always tries to cheer us up here in Siskiyou County.  Beautiful views, space to walk and our fun doggy Molly.

 9/11/2020 A Day Of Remembrance

The forest fires surrounding us are lending their smoke to the atmosphere, cooling and gloomy.  We are safe and pray to continue so but distant neighbors have not been so lucky.  They have closed the national forests due to drought and fire danger.  Our little towns will be more sleepy with less tourism.  Here are some photos from our last walk on the McCloud River Trail.  Colors of Fall creep into the conversation.  I miss the forest already.

August 2020

Mount Shasta makes it's own weather.  When the rock is exposed you see so many colors, from cinder red to purple and dark gray.  As many years as I have lived here I did not know these thistles bore a tiny lavender flower that is quite attractive.

Mount Shasta is always changing, from snow covered in winter to brilliant dark rock in summer.  An upside down aquifer for those of us who depend on water here in Siskiyou County and in California.  Take nothing for granted.
